Gonçalo Martins - Awaken Coach
Goncalo grew up in Portugal where he spent his childhood playing soccer. After several years of competitive level playing, he realized that his improper preparation and poor recovery routines had resulted in both physical and mental exhaustion.
He moved to Denver in 2009 where he finished his studies in electrical engineering and it was during this time that he discovered climbing and bodyweight training. This was a new era of physical discovery and mental challenges for him.
With no previous background in bodyweight training, he fell in love with it because of its constant physical and mental challenge. Patience, he realized, is key, however, patience is not simply the ability to wait, but rather “how we behave while we are waiting.” He uses this time to improve other aspects of his life while enjoying the process of bodyweight training.
One of his mottos comes from Ernest Hemingway “We are all apprentices in a craft in which no one ever becomes a master.”
Goncalo loves Awaken because it fosters an environment of learning, acceptance, respect, and joy. “Each person is unique and everyone progresses at a different pace and level,” he says. “We work out and grow as a group, but at the end of the day, it is an individual journey. I hope I can contribute to that journey with my passion for strength training.”
